POST-RN CAREER
"On leaving the RN, I moved from Southampton to Bedford to take up employment with a subsidiary of Courtaulds, selling paint to local authorities & Industry (the main account being Vauxhall Motors at Luton).
"I started a DIY business in 1970 and opened a second shop in 1978. In 1990, my business partner and I closed down the two shops and opened a Tool Hire Centre, which is still going strong. I still go in for two days a week and cover for holidays, mainly because I enjoy doing it. (In fact, if I didn't get paid for it, I would pay to go in.)"

HOBBIES & PASTIMES
"Mainly travelling, particularly in France, which we have been doing for over 30 years. Also long-haul destinations such as America; China; Thailand; Sri Lanka; Cuba; Mexico; Venezuela; Australia & Tasmania. On our visit to Tasmania in February 2001 we met and stayed with Mike & Thelma Power for a very enjoyable two days.
"We are also season ticket holders at Southampton FC, which entails a 260-mile round trip (we are obviously quite mad!)."
